A short time later, she was startled awake.

Was that thunder? No. Too close. The wolves. Growling.

She struggled for consciousness. A shadow hovered over her. She must be dreaming again. Then a face came into focus. She bolted upright in bed.

“Cru!” she exclaimed.

He put a finger to his mouth and pointed to her sleeping friends. “Shhhhh,” he whispered urgently. He stood in front of the window, the moon bathing him in an eerie light.

“What are you doing here?” she whispered, climbing out of bed. “I don’t want to talk to you.”

He pulled her toward the door. “I wanted to say I'm sorry,” he whispered. “Darva told me I was a jerk and she's probably right.” He opened the door and urged her outside. She checked on her friends; they were all fast asleep. She nodded and stepped outside.

“Look, I get it,” Cru said, closing the door behind them. “None of this is your fault. I’m here to propose that, if you can’t stay out of my way—which is obviously impossible for you—maybe we should try working together. Mr. Aylward and his gang are so quick to distrust my grandmother that they won’t even consider our point of view.”

“Gang?” Sophia whispered sharply. “You make it sound as if they’re the ones stomping around here, making threats.”

“Look, I know my grandmother can be dramatic,” Cru sighed. “I’ll give you that. But the solstice is almost here. Why isn’t Council stepping up the search for the Orb? Why is my grandmother the only one panicking? Trust me, things are much worse than they sound. Give me half an hour of your time to show you our side. Then maybe you won’t be so quick to judge us.”

“Okay, but I warn you,” Sophia said. “There’s nothing you can say to make me trust Esmeray. Rayson tried to kill me only a few hours ago.”

Cru’s eyes flashed. Sophia could see he was struggling to control his temper. “You took something that wasn’t yours, something that meant a lot to the future of Chiralis. He wanted it back. Maybe he acted impulsively and didn’t think everything through, but do you seriously think he would try to kill you?” He ran a hand through his hair. “Can’t you even consider the possibility that your fall was an unfortunate accident? Or at the very least, it was partly your fault too?”

“May I remind you that I didn’t ask for any of this?” Sophia said.

Cru took a deep breath and calmed himself. “Look, you can't judge anything until you've seen for yourself what's happening in Chiralis. It doesn't take a genius to figure out you're probably no ordinary Chiralian. Still, that doesn't mean you get to come in here and take over. I’ve got too much invested in finding the Orb.”

Sophia laughed out loud. “Trust me, I have no interest in taking over.”

Cru scowled. “Good. Because my grandmother won’t give up until Chiralis is safe. I promised her I would find the Orb. I intend to keep that promise.”

“So what?
